Riding has lost an "outstanding politician and representative": Huntington
DELTA, BC - With the announcement that John Cummins will not seek re-election, Delta-Richmond East has lost “an outstanding politician and representative who has for more than 18 years never wavered in the positions he has taken on issues that impact his riding, his province and his country,” commented Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington.
“I have known and worked with John both in his constituency office and as a municipal and provincially elected colleague for many of those years.” Huntington said, “I admire John’s determination to remain true to his beliefs and work tirelessly for his objectives even when doing so has attracted criticism from within and outside his party. He has never kept silent or changed his stance on issues he felt to be critical – fisheries is just one example - and he has done this willingly and at cost to his own political advancement within his party. He has been a politician of whom his constituents have been justifiably proud and he leaves huge shoes to fill.”
Huntington added that she has no intention of trying to fill these shoes. “I will not be running for John’s seat in the next election,” she stated categorically. “My commitment is to provincial politics and to representing the riding of Delta South in Victoria.
